I remember when Klout had announced last year that Facebook pages were starting to contribute to the Klout score, many people got excited. For brands that are quite well known and that have a very interactive community on their Facebook pages, that may be a good thing. However, for individual business owners or individuals in general, do not expect your score to be very high if your Facebook page is hooked up to Klout. You will end up with a much higher number if you have your profile contributing to your Klout score.

A lot of people are not all that comfortable with using their personal profiles as an interactive place for fans. The fact of the matter is, if you really want to get out there and be influential in your field, you need to accept that there is no real privacy with social media and why not make the best of it? Not to mention, in all honesty, the pros of having an interactive profile do indeed outweigh the cons. There are two main reasons for this.

1. You Can Control the Size of your Friends List on your Profile. As I had stated in a previous post, if you have a huge network that is not interactive with what you are putting out, your Klout score will be hurting. You will receive subscribers to your profile however that does not have a huge effect. If you have a huge number of friends who are not being receptive to anything you put out on your profile, you have the choice to delete non-active connections. With a fan page, firstly doing that would be difficult, and secondly, why alienate anyone who could be a client or customer later on even if they don’t interact with your content? You could have 50,000 fans on your fan page, and you will not end up with a huge percentage interacting with you even if hundreds at a time do. It does not matter in this case if the fans are real or not. If 1000 fans are consistently interacting with you and you have 50K fans on your page, that means only 2{a0065375a7e2d1c093abc1aba7894b1ad713a40df7f413d8a34d916c8e570350} of your fans are engaging with your content on your fan page, then that is not going to be helpful to your score. You want to have a large percentage of those in your network on Facebook interacting with you, and you have better control of that with your profile. This is one major reason that those who have their personal profiles hooked to Klout have much higher scores than those who have their pages.

2. You Will Reach a Wider Audience. If you post images or links on your Facebook pages, don’t be surprised if you do not end up with a lot of views. Only text counts, and with profiles, everything you put out will get out there fast. The more of an audience you will reach, the more interaction you will receive. Sure, you can only put out text updates on your pages and you can end up with a bigger audience that way, however, that can get boring no matter how interesting and useful the updates are. People like variety. They want to see a mixture of links, images, text and videos.

Remember as well, if privacy is a huge issue, you can always have a separate profile for your family and personal friends to interact with you. However, you need a profile that you will network with. Unless your page represents a business, organization or cause- it is time to start becoming more active on your profile. It is not only there to help your Klout score, however I am sure you will want all of your content viewed!
